Dr. Joy Hardison earned both her MD and MPH in 2009. She attended the Mayo Medical School, while simultaneously studying Public Health at the University of Minnesota. During medical school, Dr. Hardison served as co-president for the Mayo Clinic chapter of the American Medical Association, Medical Student Section, and founded the Medical Student Section’s Committee on Public Health. She also holds a BA in Political Science from UCSD, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and received the Sanford Lakoff Award for her honors thesis on uninsured and underserved populations in California.
Dr. Hardison completed her Residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona, and has since worked in hospitals throughout the Southwest, including Scripps Encinitas, Mountains Community Hospital, Kaiser Hospital San Diego, and the University Medical Center Tucson.
She has also worked for digital health companies such as Livongo, AristaMD, and Vivace Health Solutions, and provides consulting services for the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Hardison founded Healthtopia Clinics in 2018 to bridge the gap between traditional urgent care and naturopathic medicine, leveraging the benefits of both practices to provide patients with thoughtful, comprehensive care.
In her free time, Joy enjoys yoga, meditation, running, baking and cooking, and spending time with friends and family. She has 2 children and 2 dogs.
Dr. Emaline Brown earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2017. She went on to complete one year of residency at Bastyr University Clinic in San Diego, California. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from Florida State University in which she graduated magna cum laude.
During her time at National University of Natural Medicine, Dr. Brown completed rotations in primary care, neurology, intravenous therapy, dermatology/minor surgery, men’s health, and gastroenterology. In addition, she completed a six-month naturopathic mental health rotation at Pacific Psychology & Comprehensive Health Clinic and a six-month preceptorship in community healthcare in downtown Portland focusing on transgender medicine, chronic disease, and medication management.
Dr. Brown has a passion for tailoring gentle, result-based treatment plans using traditional and evidence-based therapeutics, such as nutrition, botanical medicine, and intravenous therapy. She strongly believes in an integrative, multidisciplinary care team approach that considers the biopsychosocial model in an effort to treat the whole patient. Her goal is to guide and empower all patients to find their optimal wellness.
Her clinical interests include integrative urgent care, medical and aesthetic dermatology, community health care, integrative mental health, chronic pain and disease management, and preventive care and wellness.
In her free time she enjoys frolicking on the beach with her partner, Matt and husky dog, Summit, live music, exploring the San Diego food scene, and spending time at the gym and in the surf.
Nicole moved to San Diego in 2017 from Boston, Massachusetts. She received her Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University. Prior to graduate school, she went to University of Hartford in Connecticut and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Science, along with her radiology certification. She worked as a Radiologic Technologist in Rhode Island before entering her Physician Assistant program. Today, Nicole still upholds her X-ray certification and also earned her Radiologic Technologist license in California. She has worked as a Physician Assistant in various Urgent Care settings and specializes in Rheumatology. She is eager to integrate more naturopathic medicine into her approach of treating patients as a whole.
In her free time, Nicole enjoys being a foodie with a sweet tooth, traveling, spending time at the beach, and yoga or fitness at the gym.
Charlotte is from the United Kingdom, just outside of Manchester. She studied Paramedic Science at the University of Lancashire and worked as a Paramedic with North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust for over 22 years. She provided frontline care on Ambulances, Helicopters, and rapid response vehicles, and saved lives throughout the Northwest of England.
She moved to sunny California in April 2016 to be with her Husband and began working for the Encinitas Union School District as the school nurse at Paul Ecke Central Elementary.
Now a medical assistant at Healthtopia Clinics, Charlotte is excited to learn and grow her education in Urgent Care and Naturopathic Medicine alongside Dr. Joy Hardison and Dr. Emaline Brown. She is passionate about patient care and looks forward to caring for the community.
Charlotte lives in Encinitas with her husband Andy and 8-year-old son Felix. The family enjoys the outdoors, beaches, surfing, amazing sunsets and cool vibe that the city has to offer. Coming from England, they are also avid soccer fans!
VP Business Development
James Howard is the VP of Business Development for Healthtopia Clinics and a board certified practicing emergency physician. He has a range of experience developing innovative clinical programs and also clinical experience in emergency medicine. He has focused in telemedicine, acute care at home, community paramedicine, geriatric emergency departments, and big-data analytics. Dr. Howard is a board-certified, practicing emergency medicine physician. He has also worked as a flight physician in Australia for the Royal Flying Doctors Service, doing retrieval medicine in both helicopter and fixed-wing settings.
Dr. Howard earned both his Master of Science and Medical Doctorate at the University of Hawaii. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at UC Irvine and became Chief Resident there. He went on to complete a Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Preparedness Fellowship at UCSD. James is interested in making a difference in healthcare through innovation.
In his free time, he is an active surfer, yoga practitioner, triathlete, hiker, and traveller. He also plays the piano.
