What We Handle at Our Encinitas Office
Our Encinitas clinic handles both routine primary care and many problems that need same-day attention. It is also Healthtopia’s only location with on-site X-ray, splinting, and casting.
Primary + Urgent Care
Primary care and urgent care from the same practice, plus sports medicine, women’s and men’s health, sports physicals, medical clearance before surgery, laceration repair, abscess drainage, IV hydration, infusions and injections, back pain relief, and telemedicine.
Integrative + Naturopathic Care
Naturopathic medicine and integrative medicine practiced alongside the MDs: nutrition counseling, hormone testing and replacement, botanicals, nutraceuticals and supplement guidance, lifestyle change coaching, and the Vitality and wellness programs.
X-Ray, Splinting, and Casting
On-site X-ray with fracture setting, splinting, casting, and joint injections—imaged and treated in the same visit rather than across two appointments.
EKG Services
In-clinic EKG and continuous heart monitoring, including the cardiac workup that goes with medical clearance before surgery.
Select On-Site Lab
Blood draws and lab work handled in the building, so common results come back without a separate trip. Specialized panels still go to an outside lab, and the front desk can tell you which before you book.
COVID-19 Antigen and PCR Testing
Rapid antigen results in about 15 minutes, PCR results the same day. Both use a shallow nasal swab. Encinitas is one of only two Healthtopia clinics offering PCR.
Mobile Primary and Urgent Care Throughout North County
We also come to you. Healthtopia provides mobile primary and urgent care throughout North County San Diego—at home, at the office, or at a skilled nursing, senior living, or assisted living facility.
We offer medical evaluations, treatment, and a plan of care, without moving someone who shouldn’t be moved.
Call 760.230.1888 to arrange a visit.
Four Clinics, Nearly 3,000 Patient Reviews, and 4.9 Stars
Those numbers reflect the trust Healthtopia has earned in Encinitas and across San Diego County. Behind each one is a visit where someone listened, explained, and treated the whole person rather than the symptoms in front of them.
Testimonials
ER-Trained Founders, Half a Mile From Moonlight Beach
Healthtopia was founded in 2018 by two board-certified emergency physicians—one a Mayo Medical School graduate who also teaches at Bastyr University California.
Years in emergency departments teach you to take a symptom seriously, rule things out methodically, and recognize that most of what worries a person can be answered in one careful conversation. That standard now sits on Encinitas Boulevard, six days a week.
Thirteen providers cover five specialties:
- Emergency medicine
- Family and integrative medicine
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- General practice
- Naturopathic medicine
That range of expertise means patients can often address several parts of their care in one practice rather than coordinating separate offices for urgent care, primary care, imaging, and integrative services.
Dr. Joy Hardison
CEO · Emergency Physician and General Practitioner
Earned her MD and MPH from Mayo Medical School in 2009 and completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Arizona, then spent years in hospitals across the Southwest. She is also an adjunct professor at Bastyr University California and founded Healthtopia in 2018.
Dr. James Howard
COO · MD, MS · Board-Certified Emergency Medicine
A board-certified emergency physician with more than a decade of practice and one of Healthtopia’s original founders. He has a variety of experience with healthcare transformation, health services research, emergency medical services, disaster preparedness, aeromedical retrievals, and emergency and general medical practice.
In-Network with Medicare and Most PPO Plans
Call 760.230.1888 before your first visit, and the front desk will check your specific plan while you’re on the phone. It takes a minute and saves you from any surprises later.
Our Clinic at 142 Encinitas Blvd
If you live in Encinitas, you’ve probably driven past us. We are located on Encinitas Boulevard, between Coast Highway 101 and the freeway.
From Leucadia or Cardiff, it’s only a few minutes up or down the coast. From Olivenhain, New Encinitas ,or Village Park, you can drive straight down Encinitas Boulevard.
Should You Come Here or Go to the ER?
Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas is about a mile away on Santa Fe Drive. We can address many of the issues that send people to the emergency room, including a possible fracture, a cut that needs stitches, a bad flu, and chest tightness that warrants an EKG. We have imaging and lab work in the building.
And if your symptoms make the hospital a more suitable option, we’ll tell you so directly. Knowing which of the two you need is exactly what emergency training is for.
Communities We Serve
Patients come to the Encinitas clinic from across coastal North County. If you’re further south or inland, Healthtopia also has clinics in Rancho Santa Fe, Sorrento Valley, and Hillcrest, and provides mobile visits throughout North County San Diego.
We regularly see patients from Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain, New Encinitas, Village Park, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Oceanside, and La Costa.
Landmarks Near the Clinic
The Encinitas Coaster station is about a third of a mile from our door, with Historic Highway 101 and the La Paloma Theatre just past it, and Moonlight State Beach roughly half a mile west. All three are an easy walk.
Heading south along the coast, the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens and Swami’s Beach are each about a mile away, and Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a couple of miles beyond that. Inland on Santa Fe Drive, you’re about a mile from Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, with Encinitas Community Park just past it.
East of the freeway, the San Diego Botanic Garden on Quail Gardens Drive and Encinitas Ranch Golf Course are both a couple of miles out.

FAQs About Our Urgent and Primary Care in Encinitas
How do I book at the Encinitas clinic?
Book online, or call 760.230.1888. If you need care now and don’t see a suitable appointment time, call the office directly rather than waiting for an opening.
Do you accept my insurance?
We are in-network with Medicare and most PPO plans. Because plans change, call 760.230.1888, and the front desk will check your specific policy before you book. Naturopathic visits are self-pay.
What if I don’t have insurance or you’re out of network?
We have self-pay rates for every service. Ask the front desk what your specific visit costs before you come in, so you know the number in advance rather than after.
Can I get an X-ray here, or do I need to go somewhere else?
Our urgent care in Encinitas has on-site X-ray plus splinting and casting, so a suspected fracture can be imaged and treated in one visit. This is the only Healthtopia location with imaging.
What is the difference between seeing an MD and an ND here?
Our MDs handle conventional diagnosis and treatment, prescriptions, urgent injuries, and chronic disease management. Our NDs work on nutrition counseling, hormone testing and replacement, botanicals and supplements, and lifestyle change. Many patients see both, and because they share a building and a chart, they are working from the same information. Naturopathic visits are self-pay.
